چکیده

The problem of determining the low Reynolds number lift and drag on a flat plate in Oseen flow is treated by the application of a variational principle due to Levine and Schwinger. This approach circumvents the difficulty which has limited previous results to drastically low values of the Reynolds number. In particular, an asymptotic form for the drag coefficient is derived, and found to be suitable for a much larger range of this parameter. The ease with which the variational principle can be applied rests heavily on the ability to reduce the pair of coupled integral equations which govern this problem to one integral equation. This equation and its adjoint are shown to have solutions which are quite simply related, which further facilitates the treatment of the variational problem.

Analysis of Flow Pattern with Low Reynolds Number around Different Shapes of Bridge Piers, and Determination of Hydrodynamic Forces, using Open Foam Software

In many cases, a set of obstacles, such as bridge piers and abutments, are located in the river waterway. Bridge piers disrupt river’s normal flow, and the created turbulence and disturbance causes diversion of flow lines and creates rotational flow. Geometric shape and position of the piers with respect to flow direction and also number of piers and their spacing are effective on changing the ...

A CFD study of the performance characteristics of vented cylinders as vortex generators

This paper mainly researched on influence of vortex generator on lift coefficient and drag coefficient, when vortex generator is mounted on a flat plate. Vented cylinders were used as vortex generators which intensify vortex shedding in the wake of the vented cylinder as compared to base line circular cylinder which ensures more attached flow and increases lift force of the system. Firstly vent...

Numerical simulation of hydrodynamic properties of Alex type gliders

Simulation of an underwater glider to investigate the effect of angle of attack on the hydrodynamic coefficients such as lift, drag, and torque. Due to the vital role of these coefficients in designing the controllers of a glider and to obtain an accurate result, this simulation has been studied at a range of operating velocities. The total length of the underwater glider with two wings is 900 ...

Unsteadiness in Flow over a Flat Plate at Angle-of-Attack at Low Reynolds Numbers

Flow over an impulsively started low-aspect-ratio flat plate at angle-of-attack is investigated for a Reynolds number of 300. Numerical simulations, validated by a companion experiment, are performed to study the influence of aspect ratio, angle of attack, and planform geometry on the interaction of the leading-edge and tip vortices and resulting lift and drag coefficients. Aspect ratio is foun...

Simulation of Gas Flow over Micro-scale Airfoils Using a Hybrid Continuum-particle Approach

Flow over micro-scale airfoils is investigated in order to understand the aerodynamic issues related to micro air vehicle design and performance. Studies have shown that such low Reynolds number flow exhibits rarefied phenomena and a flat plate having a thickness ratio of 5% has better aerodynamic performance than conventional streamlined airfoils. This paper simulates gas flows over a 5% flat ...
